Over his career, Matt has maintained a significant family law practice but has also defended clients in health care liability matters, general tort matters, workers’ compensation claims, and other business-related legal issues. Matt often represents his clients in a plaintiff capacity when his clients have been wronged by other individuals or businesses. His focus on family law, however, has afforded Matt the opportunity to serve as a Guardian ad Litem in nearly every court in Shelby County, Tennessee. Additionally, Matt has an established and well-respected mediation practice in the area of family law, having successfully mediated hundreds of cases involving financial disputes, custody disputes, parental relocations, matters involving contempt, and every other facet of domestic law. His experience as a trial lawyer in the field of family law involving complex legal issues allows Matt to approach mediation with superior legal insight and unique creativity, both of which allow Matt to help litigants solve some of the most complicated family law issues without the need for a judge to make a binding decision.
Matt has previously served on the Family Law Section of the Memphis Bar Association for four (4) years which concluded with Matt serving as the Chair of the Section in 2019. Additionally, Matt serves on the Board of Hannah’s Hope, an adoption agency located in Memphis, Tennessee that assists women and children through pregnancy and adoption. The success Matt has experienced as a mediator also allowed him to become a member of the Memphis ADR Inn of Court that includes the best lawyer-mediators in West Tennessee.
In 2006, Matt graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, with magna cum laude honors. While attending Auburn University, Matt tutored student-athletes and students in the English Center. Matt also worked at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.
While attending the University of Mississippi School of Law, Matt served as an Extern in the Alabama Attorney General’s Office where he gained direct experience in the Family Protection Unit that prosecuted domestic violence and sexual abuse crimes. That experience allowed Matt to travel the State of Alabama with Assistant Attorneys General and Attorney General Troy King. Matt also served as a research assistant to Professor Hans Sinha in the area of criminal law. Matt’s mentor during law school, Professor William W. Berry, also relied upon portions of Matt’s legal research in the published article Repudiating Death, 101 J. Crim. L. & Criminology 441 (2013). Matt graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 2010 with cum laude honors.
Matt practices in Mississippi and Tennessee, traveling both states for the needs of his clients. During his free time, Matt coaches his children’s sports teams. When sports do not occupy his free time, Matt enjoys watching Auburn sports, spending time with friends and family, and traveling, particularly to the mountains.
